Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) provide student pharmacists with opportunities to apply clinical knowledge and skills learned in the classroom and laboratory settings to authentic patient scenarios. The HCOP IPPE Program exposes student pharmacists to a diverse range of experiences in various pharmacy practice settings, including community, health-system, and ambulatory care practices as well as the Veterans Health Administration system. Each student pharmacist completes a total of 300 IPPE hours, including 8 interprofessional IPPE hours. IPPEs begin in the summer after the P1 year and continue through the P3 year. IPPEs are structured and sequenced to intentionally develop in students a clear understanding of what constitutes exemplary pharmacy practice prior to Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences which student pharmacists complete during the fourth year of pharmacy school.

    • During the Community IPPE, student pharmacists focus on gaining experience with the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process as they engage in the medication distribution process and provide medication education to patients.
    • Next, student pharmacists build upon their experience in the community pharmacy setting as they provide preventative healthcare services such as immunizations and health screenings during the Health and Wellness IPPE.
    • Throughout the Population Health IPPE, student pharmacists are exposed to a growing form of clinical practice as they utilize remote access to electronic health records of affiliated partners to provide population management services for patients.
    • During the Health-System IPPE, student pharmacists gain experience in the operational, distributive, and patient care aspects of a health-system pharmacy. As part of the Clinical IPPE, student pharmacists provide evidence-based, patient-centered collaborative care to meet the medication management needs of patients in either a primary/ambulatory care or acute care setting.

Overall, through participation in the HCOP IPPE program, student pharmacists are immersed in real world pharmacy experiences within various pharmacy practice settings. They have the opportunity to have a direct impact on patients’ health outcomes as they work with patients and providers under the guidance of practicing pharmacist preceptors.
