    Graduate Programs

The Harrison College of Pharmacy offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Pharmaceutical Science. When students enter the program, they enter one of four dynamic academic options: Health Outcomes Research and Policy, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, and Pharmacology.

Students in these programs learn under faculty members conducting life-saving and groundbreaking research in a variety of disciplines.

The Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, and Pharmacology options are designed for students interested in the drug discovery or development processes, and are offered by the Department of Drug Discovery and Development. Most students interested in pursuing these options will identify a potential mentor and be admitted directly into the mentor’s lab.

Areas of interest include neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, cancer, diabetes and other metabolic diseases, synthetic organic chemistry, forensic analytical chemistry, and drug delivery, disposition and formulation.

The Health Outcomes Research and Policy option is designed for students interested in the study of social and behavioral aspects of pharmacy, research to maximize medication-related outcomes, and comparative effectiveness research, and is offered by the Department of Health Outcomes Research and Policy. Areas of research interest include innovation adoption, comparative effectiveness, healthcare informatics, motivational interviewing, pharmacoepidemiology and drug safety, and socio-behavioral pharmacy.

Learn more about HCOP graduate programs and the academic options.

So the graduate programs here, we basically have two departments in the college. We have the Drug Discovery department, and we also have the Health Outcomes Research and Policy department. I'm in the Health Outcomes Research and Policy option, which we refer to HORP here. They really create a firm foundation where you take all sorts of courses. So you'll learn about Pharmaco, Epidemiology, Program Evaluation, Social and Behavioral theory, Health Economics, Grant Writing. There's really all these sorts of classes that you'll take, and it really helps get you started, and really figure out what do you want to do after you graduate.

The four programs are Health Outcomes Research and Policy, Pharmaceutics, Medicinal Chemistry, and Pharmacology. I am focused on a Pharmacology. My research typically is in neuroscience. So in graduate school, their curriculum is very rigorous, but it's very enriching. It's not going to be easy, but everyone is so supportive, everyone helps you out when in any way possible. If you have needed a friend to talk to or just need a professor to review any lab notes or anything like that they are very helpful. And the senior graduate students, they also serve as mentors as well.

When you're actually in the program, you'll identify a major advisor and that's who will work with you, you know, as your dissertation chair. So that person is really the faculty person that will be there to support you through your journey and really help you through the dissertation process, and then make it to graduation.
